Understand the Two Disability Programs

Before you apply, determine which Social Security program fits your situation:

• SSDI is for individuals who have worked and paid Social Security taxes for a certain number of years.
• SSI is for those with limited income and resources, and does not require a work history.

You may be eligible for one or both programs depending on your medical condition, work history, and financial situation.

Step 1: Confirm Eligibility

To qualify for disability benefits, you must show that:

• You have a medically diagnosed condition that prevents you from working.
• Your condition has lasted (or is expected to last) at least 12 months or result in death.
• You meet either the work credit requirements (for SSDI) or financial limits (for SSI).

The SSA uses a five-step evaluation process to determine whether you qualify.

Step 2: Gather Required Documentation

Before you begin your application, collect the following:

• Medical records, including diagnoses, treatments, and test results
• Names and contact info for all treating doctors
• Employment history for the past 15 years
• Most recent tax returns or W-2s
• List of medications, dates of hospital visits, and any surgeries
• Bank statements and proof of income (for SSI applicants)

Step 3: Choose How to Apply

You can apply for disability benefits in New Mexico in one of three ways:

• Online: Visit www.ssa.gov and submit your application digitally
• By Phone: Call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213
• In Person: Visit your local Social Security office (appointment recommended)

New Mexico Social Security offices are located in cities such as Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Roswell, and Santa Fe.

Step 4: Submit Your Application

Complete the application carefully. Include as much detail as possible about your medical condition, treatment history, and how your disability affects your ability to work. Missing information can delay your claim or result in denial.

Step 5: Cooperate with the SSA

After submission, the SSA may:

• Request additional documentation
• Schedule a consultative medical exam (CE) with a doctor of their choosing
• Contact you for clarification on your work or medical history

Be responsive and provide requested information promptly.

Step 6: Wait for a Decision

Initial decisions typically take 3 to 6 months. If your application is denied, don’t panic—you have the right to appeal, and many claims are approved during the appeal process.
